The Second Annual Suicide Awareness Walk will be held at Agnes Patterson Park, 3004 N 4th Ave E. The event highlights the tragedy of suicide in our communities and offers a time to remember loved ones and to support one another.   Murray & Jean Nelson Memorial Bench Dedication
Sculptor Herman Deaton has created bronze relief sculptures that have been inlaid into a bench honoring the memory of Murray & Jean Nelson. The bench was commissioned by relatives of Murray & Jean, who will be attending the dedication at Skiff Medical Center, 204 N 4th Ave E. The bench will be located under a tree near the "Cartwheel Kids" sculptures. A brief coffee time will follow and the public is encouraged to attend. This event has been CANCELLED due to technical difficulties! Side-by-side "Grudge Match" style drag races will be held at the Iowa Speedway, 3333 Rusty Wallace Drive, on the track's eighth-mile all concrete dragstrip. Spectator's gates will open at Noon. Car & Driver entry fee is $20.00 and the Technical Inspection area will be open from Noon to 3pm. Spectator tickets are $10.00 for ages 13 and older, and free for children 12 years old and younger. The in-field concession stand will be open from Noon to 5:00pm. Racers and spectators should enter the facility through the tunnel entrance, located on the south side of the oval. The Jasper County Conservation Board is looking for volunteers who are interested in learning about monarch butterfly migration & tagging research program. Participants of all ages are encouraged to meet at Maytag Park, near the shelter on the southwest loop. Please bring your own butterfly net, a limited number of nets will be provided. This free program will be cancelled in the event of rain. Naturalists will be tagging monarchs at Maytag Park on other days as well, depending on migration times.   Raincatcher/Birdbath Creations
Back by popular request at the Centre for Arts & Artists, 501 W 3rd St N, is Leta Lanphier's class in making a hypertufa rain catcher/birdbath. This class will be held in two sessions - the first session, held on 9/21, participants will make the mold and the second session, held on 9/22, participants will clean out the mold and paint the casting. The class fee is $20.00 and this class is recommended for ages 9 & up. Materials will be provided and it would be prudent to wear old clothes.   Harvest Moon Float
The Jasper County Conservation will be hosting a Harvest Moon Float at Rock Creek Lake. Participants will be able to take a canoe or kayak for a nightime paddle under a beautifil Iowa harvest moon. From the wilds of Alaska Redhead Express welcomes you to join their family for a night of outstanding entertainment and high-energy music. Volunteers are needed to help remove pop cans, plastic sacks, tires, barrels and other trash found in the river and along the banks.
