Community Fun Facts
Newton was known as the Washing Machine Center of the World because it was the location of six washing machine companies at one time.
The first corporate aircraft to fly in the US came from a Newton-based company -- The Automatic Washing Machine Company. The name of the plane was Smiling Thru and currently the Smiling Thru hanger is being restored and will soon be home to a small aviation museum.
Newton is home to the Maytag Dairy Farms, which makes the world-famous Maytag Blue Cheese.
During the holiday season more than 1,700 Christmas lights cover the Japer County Courthouse.
The Newton Mall was the first enclosed mall in Iowa.
